Difference Between Permanent Commission and Short Service Commission

The Indian Armed Forces consist of three wings namely, the Indian Army, the Indian Air Force, and the Indian Navy. The candidates who wish to join the Indian Armed Forces as officers are given two choices to opt for the service, one is Permanent Commission (PC) and the other is Short Service Commission (SSC). To help you understand the differences between these two service options clearly, we have come up with an elaborated article to clear your doubts.

Permanent Commission (PC)

A Permanent Commission means a career in the Armed Forces till you retire. In other words, a Permanent Commission in the Armed Forces means a career opportunity to serve the Nation as an Officer from the very early date of joining till the age of your retirement.

Short Service Commission (SSC) 

A Short Service Commission means a career opportunity in the Armed Forces for a short period of time, i.e., for an initial period of 10 years which can be extended up to extra 4 years. Overall, a career for a maximum of 14 years of service in the Armed Forces.

Options After 10 Years of Service through Short Service Commission 

After serving in the Armed Forces for an initial engagement of 10 years through the Short Service Commission, the officers have three options:-
  1. To opt for Permanent Commission
  2. To opt for 4 years service extension 
  3. To opt for retirement after 10 years
Conditions in all the three Options:- 

If opting for a Permanent Commission

The officers are subject to service requirements, availability of
vacancies, willingness, suitability and merit in accordance with the relevant policies as issued from time to time.

If opting for 4 Years Service Extension

The officers are subject to service requirements, availability of
vacancies, willingness, suitability, and merit. But they can resign at any time during these four years of the extension period if service is extended.

If opting for Retirement after 10 years of Service 

They would not be entitled to receive pensions if they take retirement after an initial service of 10 years only. As the minimum period of service in the Armed Forces for Officers to get eligible for pension is 20 years.
