Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exam -

Combined Defence Services, also known as CDS is a national-level defence-oriented competitive exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). CDS exam is one of the most reputed exams conducted by the UPSC twice in a year.

This exam provides a golden opportunity to the aspirants looking forward to serve as officers in the Indian armed forces. The eligible candidates are selected as officers for all the three wings of Indian Defence- Indian Army, Indian Air Force, and Indian Navy.

How to Apply For CDS Exam

Firstly, the aspirants should satisfy the eligibility criteria required to be held eligible for appearing in the CDS examination. The eligible candidates, then, can apply online by visiting the official website of the Union Public Service Commission.

Essential Eligibility Criteria for CDS Exam

  • For Indian Military Academy, Dehradun and Officers' Training Academy, Chennai -  Degree of a recognized University or equivalent.
  • For Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala - Degree in Engineering from a recognized University.
  • For Air Force Academy, Hyderabad - Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering.

Exam Details & Selection Procedure

Firstly, the candidates will appear for a written exam consists of objective-type questions. Those candidates who qualify the written tests are called for an extensive interview conducted by SSB (Services Selection Board). After all, a final merit list of selected aspirants is prepared based on the marks obtained by them in different segments of selection procedure, physical and medical suitability, and of course the number of vacancies available as per different streams. Finally, the selected candidates undergo rigorous training as per their allotted training establishments.

  • For Indian Army Candidates - Indian Military Academy, Dehradun
  • For Indian Air Force Candidates - Air Force Academy, Hyderabad
  • For Indian Navy Candidates - Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala
  • For Short Service Commission (SSC) Men/Women Candidates - Officers' Training Academy, Chennai

Exam Pattern of CDS Examination

For Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Indian Air Force Academy, Hyderabad, and Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala -

 There would be an offline pen-paper based exam consists of objective questions from three sections such as English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. Each section consists of 100 marks to be solved in a stipulated time duration of 2 hours for each paper.

For Officers' Training Academy, Chennai -

There would be an offline pen-paper based exam consists of objective questions from two sections only, namely English and General Knowledge. Each section consists of 100 marks to be solved in a stipulated time duration of 2 hours for each paper.
