Pattern of IAS Prelims Examination

The preliminary phase of UPSC Civil Service IAS exam consists of objective questions. There are two papers in preliminary exam conducted in a single day in two different shifts. The preliminary phase is also known as CSAT (Civil Service Aptitude Test).

UPSC IAS Prelims (Paper 1) -


  • Number of Questions -  100
  • Maximum Marks - 200
  • Time Duration - 2 Hours
  • Topics Covered - General Studies, General Knowledge, History, Geography, Polity and Civics, General Science, Important National & International Events, Art and Culture, Sports and Awards, Literature, Science and Technology, and Current Affairs


UPSC IAS Prelims (Paper 2) -


  • Number of Questions - 80
  • Maximum Marks - 200
  • Time Duration - 2 Hours
  • Topics Covered - Logical Reasoning and Data Interpretation, Quantitative Aptitude, Reading Comprehension, Verbal Ability, Decision-Making and Problem-Solving Aptitude, Basic Numeracy (10th Standard)

  • Papers to be counted for Merit = 7
  • Papers not to be counted for Merit = 2
